Ending the Year with a Bang!

This is most likely my last post for 2011, but if you can’t go 3 weeks without any news or advice, make sure to follow me on twitter where I will keep you in the know of Chicago happenings, or my google+ where I tend aggregate industry news and advice.

As usually there are a ton of things going on this weekend, and it’s charity show season, so catch some great bands and warm hearts. Since neither The Sound Scene or 4 ohm Group are throwing a holiday party, so this show will double for the end of year blow out, and you can helps some Chicago area kids in the process.

If you are stuck on the other side of town there is a hot show happening over at Burlington featuring The Damn Choir.

Friday 12.02.11
Do312.com is throwing a party with vitaminwater at Hard Rock Hotel with Smith Westerns, franki Chan, Black Light Saints, and the windy city soul club. * I think the RSVP for this might be closed, but Smith Westerns are coming back in February to Metro.

Weekend Show Picks

Friday 11.18.11

Joseph Arthur who is I have always enjoyed is at Lincoln Hall.

Backyard Tire Fire is doing their final Chicago Show at Double Door. A Life time ago I shared a bill with them at Metro while I was still playing in bands. They were good guys then, and buy all accounts they still are, so give them a proper send off if you are around.

Plaid is bringing it to Empty Bottle. Is there some sort of lunar event happening, I thought they only perform during those?

Butterfly Boucher is playing at Schubas.

Ra Ra Riot are over at the Metro. (Ra Ra Riot are still around?)

Saturday 11.19.11

Soft Speaker are doing their CD Release at Beat Kitchen and this is going to be solid!

Fitz and the Tantrums start the first of their 3 night stand at Metro, but… I think it’s sold out, so either you are already shakin’ your booty with them, or you are shakin’ your booty elsewhere.

Sunday 11.20.11

Night 2 of Fitz and the Tantrums at Metro, again sold out, so either you are in or out on this one.

Friday 11.11.11

Today being Nigel Tufnel day and there being way to many fun options happening tonight, I will let you sort it out for yourself. Just make sure that you don’t stop at 10 and if you need that little need that extra push over the cliff make sure to go one louder.

Saturday 11.12.11

Also know as one louder than 11. California Wives have teamed up with Big Science and DJ Pogo for a killer line-up at Schubas. Make sure to say hi to me if you make it out to the show. If you’re looking for something a bit… mmm… more, Shonen Knife is doing as Ramones set at Empty Bottle as part of their 30th anniversary, or if that isn’t enough in the right direction for you Scratch Acid is invading the Metro.

Sunday 11.13.11

To wind down the weekend if you have anything left in you, Pomegranates playing Schubas.

Not hitting any of these and know of a good show this weekend? Have a show coming up? Speak up and share!

Friday 11.4.11

Just another Friday night and another stacked weekend for shows. Take note of this young bands when you think a Friday or Saturday is going to be your best chance to get your friends and fans out, also understand you’re up against the most competition.

Consequence of Sound is putting on a great show at Sub-t that includes Le Butcherettes, Gypsyblood and rounding out the bill White Mystery. I honestly think White Mystery are going for the band that has played Chicago the most in 2011. Loyal Divide is finally doing their long awaited Kilo Records release show with Lasers Fast and Shit at Empty Bottle. Electric six is bringing their shenanigans to Double Door and if that weren’t enough! Things are getting Feisty at the Riv. (couldn’t stop myself)

Saturday 11.5.11

If some bleeps and bobbles with epic choruses are what you’re in the mood for, Anything Box is playing the congress with echonine* opening. This is a synthpop throw down and a bill a long time in the making. Wombats and The Postelles are at Sub-t. Chaperone and Dastardly team up again at Beat Kitchen. Stoop Goodnoise and Counterpunch round out a 5 band bill for The Ivory Theory at HOB.

Sunday 11.6.11

Personally I plan on grabbing some shut eye, but if you know of a good show, please share with everyone.

Not hitting any of these and know of a good show this weekend? Have a show coming up? Speak up and share!

*Total Dis-closer: once upon a time I managed echonine as part of my company 4 ohm entertainment group. I still support them and if you haven’t checked them out and are a fan of synthpop/electro do yourself a favor! Rest assured good reader, I will be upfront with you.

Weekend Show Picks

Friday 10.28.11

Clash of the pop-tarts: If you aren’t hitting The Super Happy Fun Club for their UK tour sendoff than slid over to my favorite basement venue Elbo Room for Archie Powell & the Exports * for their homecoming show. If you aren’t feeling either of those JC Brooks & the Uptown Sound are doing their Bloodshot records release at Double Door, or around the corner at Sub-T there is Santah with Army Navy so; in short another tall Friday night around town.

Saturday 10.29.11

Double Door’s 15th Annual Halloween Bash. Another stacked bill with a bunch veteran bands keeping this tradition alive. If you aren’t feeling that Model Stranger is dressing up like Nirvana at Elbo Room, or there is no shortage of Halloween themed event all over.

Sunday 10.30.11

The mighty Sebadoh bring a lot of sound to the little room of Schubas.

Not hitting any of these and know of a good show this weekend? Have a show coming up? Speak up and share!

If you aren’t hitting Obits over at Sub-t Tim Larson and the Owner Operators are over at Hideout. *make sure to have some whiskey with Jarod.

Saturday 10.22.11
Lot of fun things going on. Friendly Fires are at Metro and if you haven’t yet, your really should. While I’m not in love with their newest release they put on a great show. If your not in the mood for that but still want to dance without going to a club. Check out the Bo-keys at Double Door. They are a great soul band and a good time live.

Sunday 10.23.11
Phantogram are at Metro and a few close friends were raving about them during SX so certainly something to check in on. Hemmingbirds are down at Reggie’s and Light FM (who I thought either broke up or moved away) are at Sub-t with the Assembly.

Weekend Show Picks

Friday 10.14.11

Odds are you probably already know what you are doing tonight and have gotten tickets for Primus at the Congress, Mathew Sweet at Bottom Lounge, NOFX at HOB, Neon Indian at Lincoln Hall or some cover band calling themselves “Smashing Pumpkins” at the Riv. Just in case none of those shows are wetting your whistle. Crocodiles are playing with Dum Dum Girls at Empty bottle and Mutts are doing an early show down at Reggie’s followed by a late show with the Lumineers.

Saturday 10.15.11

If you aren’t joining me at Ultra Lounge for the CMJ send off show featuring Paper Thick Walls, the Damn Choir, Kellen & Me, Radiation City (Portland) and a surprise guest that will be announced tomorrow morning, than I hope you find your way to Schubas for the Rosebuds as they are doing a Sweet Relief benefit show. * I will have The Sound Scene buttons to give away so say hi.

Sunday 10.16.11

Hopefully you still have some steam left in you because Lockley is playing at Schubas and Rabble Rabble are over at Sub-T

Weekend Show Picks

This is one of those jam packed weekends that there is just too much going on.

Friday 9.23.11
If you haven’t seen Liam Finn yet he puts on one helluva show and is playing Lincoln Hall. I have caught him a few times and he never disappoints. Over at the Metro, California Wives are taking a break from writing their record to open for the legendary Peter Hook (Joy Division/New Order/Monaco) For the record he is one of my all time top 5 favorite bassists.
If you aren’t catching either of those show… There is GREAT band from Boston called The Wandas whose S/T release is a must listen for any fan of early Wilco or a lover of solid crafted pop music. They are over at Panchos, and if you make it to this show, make sure to come say hi to me!

Saturday 9.24.11
Hideout is celebrating their 15th year with a Killer line up of a Block Party, and proceeds are going towards Rock for Kids one of my favorite charities.
Check out the Summer Sessions on the Square in Logan Square at the monument with In Tall Buildings afterward slide over to The Whistler for some tasty cocktails and help them celebrate their 3 year anniversary.

The city has a triple dip of nostalgia with Jane’s Addition playing Metro, The Psychedelic Furs with Tom Tom Club at House of Blues, and OMD at the Vic.

Sunday 9.25.11
The Horrors are at Lincoln Hall and from what I have heard from their release it will be worth staying out on the school night. Night 2 of Jane’s Addition at Metro and Daphne Willis is at Double Door.

Not hitting any of these and know of a good show this weekend or have something coming up? Speak up and share!
